 SHAPE

Bushes. Short stems mean easy picking and spraying.

Cordons. These are the answer where quality fruit is required to be grown in the minimum of space. Cordons are tied to wires stretched between posts and can be laid over at 45° to reduce vigour and produce more fruiting wood within reach. Cordons on MM106 rootstock should be planted at about 2.5ft apart and M9 and M27 at 1.5ft.

Half-standards have stems of about 3.5ft. They are grafted on the more vigorous rootstock MM111 or MM106 according to the vigour of the variety. Allow about 18ft. diameter each.

Espalier-trained trees. Two horizontal tiers from a central leader off which further tiers can be grown if required. To be planted on wires between posts or against walls. Allow 10-12ft width.

Fan trained trees have been specially grown flat, ready to be planted on sunny walls and fences. Allow a width of 10-12ft. per tree and a height of at least 6ft

Step-over trees. You can literally step over these low-level, single tier espaliers when planted beside a path. On M.27 dwarf rootstock, you can pick a couple of dozen apples from a fruitful, unusual edging. We offer strong, 2-year trees for planting 5ft. apart.

Pillarettes. Slender fruit columns that grow to about 5ft. bearing fruits all up the stem. Perfect for small gardens and containers. Grafted on M9 rootstock for apples and Quince C for pears.

1-yr. Trees (Maidens). These are 1 year unpruned trees on the various rootstocks ready to be trained into any shape required.
